How much should you tip?
Tipping customs vary by country. In the United States, 15–20% of the bill is typical for good table service, with 18% a common middle ground. In many other countries a smaller tip, or none at all, is normal because service is included. Use the quick buttons or the slider to match the situation, and the split makes it easy to share the bill.
How to work out a tip in your head
Tipping maths is just percentages with a friendly base. Find 10% by moving the decimal point one place left, then build the number you want from it.
Tip before or after tax?
Etiquette guides in the US generally suggest tipping on the pre-tax subtotal, since tax is not part of the service. In practice many people tip on the total because it is simpler; on a $50 bill the difference is under a dollar. What matters more is being consistent and not letting the tip drop below what the service was worth.
Splitting a bill fairly
Two conventions, both defensible: split the whole bill evenly including tip, or have everyone cover their own items and apply the same percentage to each. Even splitting is faster and usually kinder to the group dynamic; itemised splitting is fairer when one person had three courses and another had soup. This calculator handles the even split — divide the total after tip by the number of people, then round each share up to the nearest convenient amount so the total is never short.
Rough guidance by service
| Service | Common US range | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Restaurant, table service | 18 – 20% | Higher for large groups or exceptional service |
| Counter or takeaway | 0 – 10% | Discretionary; often a rounding-up of the change |
| Bar, per drink | $1 – $2 | Or 20% on a tab |
| Food delivery | 15 – 20% | Minimum a few dollars on small orders |
| Taxi or rideshare | 10 – 15% | More for help with luggage |
| Hairdressing | 15 – 20% | Per stylist if more than one worked on you |
Customs vary enormously by country. In much of Europe service is included and rounding up is plenty; in Japan tipping can be actively unwelcome; in parts of the Middle East and South Asia a service charge is standard on top of the bill. When travelling, check local practice rather than exporting your own.
